Fee agreed for 26 goal striker: Who is Giorgos Giakoumakis?

Giorgis Giakoumakis

Celtic have reportedly agreed a fee with Dutch outfit VVV-Venlo for Greek international striker, Giorgos Giakoumakis.

An initial outlay of €2.5m - plus a future sell-on clause - is enough for recently relegated VVV to part with their star man, who topped the scoring charts in the Eredivisie last season with 26 goals.

The 26 year old holds the record for the only player to be named top scorer in the Dutch Premier League in the same season that his team were demoted and it now looks like he will be swapping relegation battles for title challenges, as he enters into contract negotiations with The Hoops.

A different option

The Greek hitman has been in inspired from in 2021 and started off the year being named the top goalscorer in the world for the month of January, before winning the Eredivisie Player of the Month award, as he notched 11 goals in six matches.

It's fair to say that the striker has enjoyed the best spell of his career since making the move away from his homeland. Giakoumakis never really found his stride in Greece, despite earning a move as a talented 22 year old, to serial title challengers, AEK Athens.

The forward was unable to break into the first team at AEK and had two loans spells outside the Greek capital before moving to Holland in a deal worth €600k in 2020, where he has since flourished.

At 6ft 1in tall, Giakoumakis offers a physical presence and an aerial threat currently lacking in Celtic's attacking options. Although he managed four goals with his head last campaign, it's his ability to use his strength to hold off defenders in the box and finish with both feet that should excite the Parkhead faithful.

As speculation continues around the immediate future of Odsonne Edouard, Ange Postecoglou will be keen to add extra firepower to complement the goals that Japanese sensation, Kyogo Furuhashi has added to his Celtic side.
